The Joyful Mysteries unveil the dawn of salvation through the annunciation, visitation, nativity, presentation, and finding of Jesus in the temple.

Ecce ancilla Domini: fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum (Lucae 1:38).

Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord: let it be done to me according to your word.

Annunciation to Mary

In holy Nazareth, the angel Gabriel comes to Mary, foreshadowed in Isaiah: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.


Mary shows faith, humbly responds to God:

Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word.


The Word becomes flesh, the light of the world is incarnate:

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us..

Visitation of Mary

In the hills of Judea, Mary goes to Elizabeth, foreshadowed in Malachi:

Behold, I will send my angel, and he shall prepare the way before my face.


The infant in the womb leaps for joy, the Holy Spirit fills Elizabeth:

The infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.


Mary sings the Magnificat, praising God in joy:

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

that is to be ruler in Israel.


The Virgin Mary bears the Son, the light of the world appears:

She shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Emmanuel.


Angels proclaim glory, peace on earth is preached:

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.

Every firstborn is mine; ye shall sanctify all that openeth the womb.


Simeon prophesies under the Spirit, announces the light to the Gentiles:

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace.


Anna praises God, sanctifies the temple with prayer:

And there was Anna, a prophetess, who departed not from the temple.

Finding of Jesus in the Temple

In holy Jerusalem, Jesus is found among the doctors, foreshadowed in Wisdom:

Wisdom hath builded her house, and hewn out her seven pillars.


His parents seek him, marveling at the divine word:

And his parents were wondering at those things which were said of him.


Jesus reveals his teaching, pursuing the Father’s will:

Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?
